The Yankees have signed David Aardsma, the former Red Sox reliever who had Tommy John Surgery last July, to a one-year deal with an option for 2013, according to Jack Curry of the YES Network.
Aardsma, 30, is a hard throwing, fastball/slider type who was on the shelf last season even before TJS with hip and elbow injuries. He had a great 2009 season with the Mariners, putting up a 2.52 ERA, a 10/1 K/9, and a 4.3 BB/9. In 2010 he had another decent season with a 3.44 ERA, a 8.9 K/9, and a 4.5 BB/9. So there is some promise there.
Being that he had surgery in July, he won’t be ready until the All-Star break at the earliest so he could be a nice midseason pickup. However, the real value in this deal is that it is a Jon Leiber type deal in that they are really signing him for next year.
