Philadelphia Phillies 2 — New York Yankees 6   Andy Pettitte and Ben Francisco made their Spring debut for the Yankees in tonight’s 6-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.   Ben Francisco was recently acquired by the Yankees and made his first start in the outfield tonight, competing for a job on Opening Day. The first pitch Francisco saw in the 1st inning was driven to center field, over the centerfielder Ben Revere for a two-run double to give the Yankees an early lead. Ichiro Suzuki had two hits today including a bloop single that brought in a run in the 2nd inning. The Yankees offense was helped by four errors by the Phillies. Juan Rivera is still showing a good effort to make the Opening Day roster with two hits today, driving in one and scoring twice.   Derek Jeter made his first start at shortstop tonight and didn’t have many defensive opportunities but he started an attempt at a double play in tonight’s game. Another Yankee making their first start today was on the mound, Andy Pettitte. The 40-year old lefty pitched into the 4th inning but didn’t get an out after walking two. In three innings, Pettitte gave up one run on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Mariano Rivera continues to prepare for his final season with a quick nine-pitch perfect inning. David Aardsma gave up a solo home run in his inning of work as he tries to compete for a spot in the bullpen. Shawn Kelley did have a good inning with two strikeouts as another candidate for a spot in the bullpen.   Win – Andy Pettitte Loss – Cliff Lee   Notables Phillies *Darin Ruf – 1 for 3, R, Solo Home Run (1) in the 6th, RBI (7) *Dominic Brown – 1 for 3, RBI (5) Yankees *Ben Francisco – 1 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI (4) *Juan Rivera – 2 for 3, 2 R, RBI (4)

Chipper Jones Says Hell No To The Yankees

CHIPPER TO YANKEES: Chop This! I was very glad to see Chipper Jones reject the Yankees’ overtures for a comeback. It’s not that I wouldn’t want to see Jones have a change of heart, but not with the Yankees … not with anybody else but the Braves. I’ve always admired players to begin and end it with the same team. That‘s what I want to see for David Wright. It’s one...

My Own Tribute To A Little Bit Of History in 2013

This year, I plan on witnessing my own little slice of history during the season. I don’t know exactly when it will occur and to be honest, I can’t guarantee it will occur, but I’m going to try my hardest to see it. This season, I plan on going to Yankee Stadium and watching Mariano Rivera nail down a save for the New York Yankees. Sure, I’ve seen it before. Most of us probably...

Spring Training: Baseball Heaven

Sun, warm weather, and baseball. Every year in Florida and Arizona, MLB teams open up Spring Training camps in minor league stadiums and practice facilities. It brings the big leagues to communities that would otherwise never really see MLB action. The players are separated from the fans by a simple chain link fence, like a set of neighbors in the backyard. I have been lucky enough...
