Cory Wade's week started off on a sour note, as the New York Yankees reliver gave up Mark Trumbo's walk-off home run in Monday night's loss to the Los Angeles Angels. But Wade, who started his big-league career four years ago up the freeway with the Los Angeles Dodgers, got a chance to redeem himself before leaving Southern California. With the Yankees clinging to a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning Wednesday, manager Joe Girardi called on Wade to face Howie Kendrick with runners at the corners. Wade fell behind 3-0, but he battled back with a pair of called strikes before Kendrick fouled off three straight pitches, the first two on curveballs. After watching Kendrick foul off an 89 mph sinker, Wade came back with another curveball, getting Kendrick to swing through the 74 mph pitch for the third out. "That's a huge run in the game," Wade said. "It's kind of a pivotal point. I was just trying to get strikes. I wanted to get him out as fast a...

Yanks C Martin says he had unusual run-in with ump

Yankees catcher Russell Martin says home plate umpire Laz Diaz decided on an unusual way to punish him for arguing balls and strikes. Martin says Diaz wouldn't allow him to throw new baseballs back to his pitchers after fouls during New York's 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night. Martin and Diaz got into it early in the game, and Martin says Diaz '...

Bombers Getting Bombed: A Look at the Yankees’ Inability to Keep Opponents in the Yard

Around this time last year, there was a patently absurd notion pervading coverage of the New York Yankees. Writers, bloggers and radio hosts were mostly in agreement: The Yankees were hitting all too many home runs. At the time, I did a full analysis of the situation, and determined that these home runs were not being paid for with extra outs, essentially making them upgraded singles...

Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight razor… and surviving.” Seriously, that pic looks like a still straight out of the final scenes in Apocalypse Now. Derek Jeter looks positively Brando-esque. Okay, okay, actual caption: Derek [...]

Not-So-Rapid Reaction: Yankees 6, Angels 5

The Yankees last night only had one good inning. However, that inning was the perfect illustration of what this offense looks like when things are right. Ervin Santana needed 48 pitches to get through the frame, but more stunningly, he got nobody out with any of the first 38. Russell Martin led off with a eight-pitch walk, advancing to third when Derek Jeter lined the sixth offering...
