Replacement Level Yankees:
BOSTON—Hideki Matsui homered twice and drove in seven runs, Alex Rodriguez had four hits and Mark Teixeira added three more RBIs as the Yankees outslugged the Red Sox, 20-11, on Friday at Fenway Park.
By the sixth inning, every batter in the Yankees’ lineup had scored at least one run. Powered by a 23-hit attack, New York set a new season high in runs scored to snap their seven-game losing streak in Boston, including the first six meetings with the Red Sox here this season.
It wasn’t pretty, but the Yankees did what they had to do by winning at least one of the three games in this series. That it came in the opener means they now have a chance to really bury Boston in the AL East race.
This may be Matsui’s final season in MLB, and if it is he’s going out with a bang. I’ve always liked Matsui, and I’m happy to see him going out strong.
