Texas Rangers star Michael Young finished eighth in the American League most valuable player voting. Detroit's Justin Verlander won the award while Young was one of just six players to receive a first-place vote. Young received one first-place vote and finished with 96 points, nine behind Boston's Adrian Gonzalez. Young's lone first-place vote came from Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. The eighth-place finish matches a career best for Young, who also finished eighth in the 2004 MVP voting. Young hit .338 this season and set a career high with 106 RBI. He did that and also started at three positions in the field while also being the primary designated hitter for the Rangers. Young wasn't the lone Ranger receiving MVP votes. Second baseman Ian Kinsler finished 11th and third baseman Adrian Beltre was 15th. Outfielder Josh Hamilton also received one 10th-place vote.
