Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
Three days from now, the Red Sox [team stats] will get their next day off.
Anyone mind if Josh Beckett [stats] plays a few rounds of golf?
Earlier this month, Beckett incited a firestorm by spending an off day on the links after being skipped for one start because of a stiff muscle behind his right shoulder. At worst, he came off as disrespectful to the organization. At best, he showed a lack of judgment. Even pitching coach Bob McClure agreed it didn’t look good.
But here is the reality: Like him or not, Beckett has been the Red Sox’ best starting pitcher. And yesterday, he couldn’t have been much better.
Facing the Phillies in the finale of a three-game interleague series, Beckett gave up seven hits, only three of which left the infield, and ran his scoreless streak to 14 innings before finally yielding a run in the eighth. The Red Sox emerged with a 5-1 victory, and Beckett posted a quality start for the sixth time in eight appearances.
Herald: Beckett superb in Sox win
To answer Lauber's question: no people won't be mad because he's not being taken out for precautionary reasons. That's why people were mad about what happened. If he had pitched like this a couple weeks ago, Sox fans would recommend courses for him.
That's the thing with this city and its fans: we don't care what you do or how you act! As long as you bust your ass and win, we will deal with you for as long as possible. Beckett has been Boston's sweetheart & public enemy #1 yet he's the same stubborn bastard today as he was six and a half years ago. Winning changes the perception.
The way Beckett has come out the past two outings has done plenty to get people off of his back. If he gets into the same pitching groove he was for most of the 2011 season, he will be cheered and if he can work magic in the playoffs once again... he will become Boston's most beloved once again.
Again, winning solves everything.

The Red Sox take the series with a 5-1 victory behind Josh Beckett and a strong 7 2/3 inning pitching performance. The Sox have won their second straight and 8 of their last 10.
This game was far from a pitching duel, as the Sox were not fooled by anything Cliff Lee delivered (7 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 6 K). Josh Beckett on the other hand...
Josh Beckett had a great day on the mound on Sunday, but he was sure to give the defense credit after the 5-1 win. Beckett pointed out which teammates made key plays behind him as he logged 7 2/3 innings with just one earned run. The starter also gave revealing information about how he approaches his rare at-bats when facing National League teams. See what he has to say about that...
Three starts ago, Josh Beckett was booed off the mound at Fenway Park and people were questioning his commitment to the Boston Red Sox given his comments after that start.
He responded in his next start by throwing seven shutout innings. But one start does not mean things were completely better. I think after his latest start, we don't need to question Beckett about anything...
Editor's note: NESN.com is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine's words. Each game day, we will select a Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. Josh Beckett has always been known as a guy who can dig deep and use his intensity to dominate opposing teams. In his last start, he blew past the Seattle Mariners. That win avenged not only...
Josh Beckett vs. Cliff Lee. Don't tell me you weren't sweating this a tad. The Sox were coming in to this game hoping for a win to be able to take the series from the Phils. Happily, Josh Beckett continued the trend of pitching well and the Sox bats got all over Cliff Lee early in the game.
Beckett looked good early and ended up pitching into the 8th inning. It...

PHILADELPHIA -- Mike Aviles again gave the streaking Boston Red Sox a quick lead Sunday afternoon, and Josh Beckett made it stand up, as the Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1. Josh Beckett throwing a pitch Sunday against the Phillies. Beckett threw 7 2/3 innings and allowed just one run in the victory.
Mike Aviles hit three home runs this past weekend in Philadelphia, including leadoff bombs the past two games, and the Boston Red Sox took two-out-of-three from the Phillies to claim the series victory. Winning by scores of 7-5 and 5-1, the Sox were...
The Phils' winning streak came to a hault last night, but that doesn't mean they can't get back on the horse and keep winning. With the series split at one-a-piece, the Phillies are aiming to take the series over the Red Sox, and they're sending out Cliff Lee (0-1, 1.95 ERA).
Lee is making his third start back from the DL and his sixth start overall today. Lee has...
The Red Sox were firing on all cylinders on Sunday, from the starting pitching all the way to another strong effort from the offense. Josh Beckett started things on the mound, going 7 2/3 innings before allowing his only run of the day on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. He also struck out five Phillies batters. He had a great offense to thank in the 5-1 win, too. Mike Aviles...

Baseball began early this year, in Japan on March 28tth. It's only May and many of the premier teams, the Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers, Tampa Bay and others are struggling because of injuries. The New York Yankees hit hard with the loss of baseball's greatest closer, Mariano Rivera, out for the rest of the season and possibly out of baseball for good. Trading...
