Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. According to FoxSports.com, the Red Sox have agreed to terms with catcher David Ross on a two-year contract worth $6.2 million. The deal is pending a physical for the 35-year-old, who played the last four seasons with the Braves. It is unclear what this means for returning catchers Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ryan Lavarnway, although FoxSports.com quotes a source as saying the right-handed hitting Ross will be "more than a backup but not a starter."  Ross, who played briefly with the Red Sox in 2008 (8 games) before being released, hit .256 with a .770 OPS while backing up Brian McCann in 2012. He was playing off a two-year, $3.25 million deal. WEEI - Report: Red Sox to sign catcher David Ross It's not Cody Ross, but the Sox have made a solid if unspectacular signing, by bringing in catcher David Ross. None of us were terribly thrilled with Saltalamacchia, and Lavarnway is a big question mark, so that the Sox would bring in a solid veteran catcher isn't a surprise.  I won't pretend to know a ton about David Ross, but I do know he's a competent backup catcher who's fairly solid at the plate.  But to add a little perspective, his Fangraphs WAR rating over the past two seasons have been 1.4 and 1.5.  Salty, who's played twice as many games over that time, rates 1.7 and 2.0.  It will be interesting to see how this catcher situation shakes out though.  Especially if the Sox do see him as "more than a backup but not a starter".  Whatever that means.  Either Salty or Lavarnway could be moved.  Salty could see a transition to first.  Lavarnway could hang out in Pawtucket for a while longer.  A lot of things could happen. Cherington has given himself some flexibility at a position that's left a bit to be desired since Tek's downfall, which is a good thing.  So I'm happy to have Ross on board.  Still, though - I'd have rather woken up to news that it was Cody, not David. Also, if you're interested in the Kuroda signing, he turned down the Yankee's qualifying offer.  He is free.
