Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. The Angels have explored the possibility of trading Dan Haren and Ervin Santana before Wednesday, the date on which option decisions are due, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports. The Angels are not expected to exercise Haren’s $15.5MM option or Santana’s $13MM option. A rival executive suggested to Heyman that it could be difficult to trade the pitchers given their disappointing performances in 2012. GM Jerry Dipoto wanted to trade Santana last winter, but owner Arte Moreno wanted to keep him, according to Heyman. Here's my take: many teams are in need of starting pitching, so it’s possible that a club would look at the options and determine that they’re reasonable. They would be especially appealing to teams that are often spurned by free agents. Also, a team that acquired Haren or Santana and exercised the option could make the hurler a qualifying offer following the 2013 season, assuming a rebound. That could net any acquiring organization a first-round pick in the 2014 draft. MLB Trade Rumors: Angels could trade Santana, Haren Yes this has been circulating for a couple days but now with Ervin Santana being sent to the Royals for reliever Brandon Sisk, it gives an idea of how desperate the Angels are in getting rid of both of these guys. They're trying to cut their losses elsewhere so they can offer Zach Grienke a massive deal to stay with them. Haren had himself a down season in 2012: 12-13 with a 4.33 ERA and it could just be one of those seasons where it just wasn't going his way. Ever since he's joined Oakland in the Mark Mulder trade, he's started at least 30 games every season, and he's walks per nine innings has never gone over 2.5.  If Boston were to inquire and get him, he'd probably fit in either as our #2 or #3 in the rotation and be able to pitch every five days. With the question marks like Clay Buchholz's back & John Lackey's elbow, it would be nice to have someone else stay in the rotation. If the Sox were to trade someone like Alex Wilson and a lower level prospect for Haren & some cash, it would be worth it for the stability.
