“I feel pretty good,” said Iglesias, 2-for-30 since being called up from Triple-A Pawtucket. “I feel more comfortable at the plate in the last few days.”

Valentine declined to discuss Iglesias’ progress with any specificity, although the manager indicated that Iglesias looks “different” at the plate than he did toward the end of spring training. At that time, Valentine said Iglesias had made improvements offensively.

“I think he looks like he was at the beginning (of spring training),” Valentine said. “But I don’t really remember that well.”

Herald | Jose Iglesias at-bats under scrutiny

I'm glad you feel good, Jose, because the rest of us are either angry or nervous.

I know the old saying is that you don't judge players by how they play in April and September...but you can't help but worry when watching Iglesias. He looks nervous. He looks lost at the plate. His fielding hasn't even been that sharp, as a few times he's made plays a little harder than he needs to (which Remy points out every time it happens).

I'm still on board with just giving him the job next year and seeing what happens. Maybe he'll settle down. And if he doesn't, we'll be looking for a new shortstop in 2014. It's not like this regime isn't accustomed to looking for new shortstops.

On page 2, let's look at the standings.

Cool Standings

I can't believe Tampa has fallen back so much. I won't count them out yet, even with the Orioles having 10 times better chance at making the playoffs, but it certainly doesn't look good. Since they've passed the Yankees for how much I hate them, I enjoyed Eck's rant on the NESN postgame show last night, just killing Tampa for how they've fallen apart. I'm guessing he just took one of his old Sox rants and swapped in the team name.

I really can't believe the Orioles and A's have hung around and are in pole position to advance. Sorry if it's not very fun, but I've just expected the teams with better pedigrees -- Rays, Tigers, Angels -- to come storming to the front when it matters. But we all know reputation doesn't mean much -- if it did, the Sox wouldn't be in the basement.

Red Sox Stick With Winning Formula to Squash Tampa Bay's Playoff Hopes

After struggling mightily all month, the Red Sox finally seem to have found something resembling a groove, winning four of their last five games and dealing a healthy blow to whatever remaining hopes the Tampa Bay Rays had of sneaking into postseason play.
