Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. There was no getting around that Lester has now gone six straight starts without a win. Or that he allowed five extra-base hits, including a two-run homer to right by Chris Davis which keyed a three-run third inning.     Understandably, his manager chose to emphasize the good.     "I thought today was much improved over the last couple of outings," said John Farrell. "With the exception with the 3-and-1 cutter that Davis hit out of the ballpark, they put the bat on some balls. They found some holes, there were some balls that fell in. But given the number of strikeouts, no walks issued . . . I thought much-improved today.     "Now, the bottom line isn't going to suggest that -- the line score that's put up there. But I think (it was) a step in right direction, for sure." CSNNE | Lester not getting innings, results Sox need We've reached a point with Lester where there's not much to say. He looks the same in every start. He's not sharp, starts walking people, gets his angry face going, and then leaves the ball over the plate trying to throw strikes. It must be tremendously frustrating for John Farrell, who's been a huge supporter of Lester since he was a prospect. Reportedly Farrell threw himself in front of the Manny and Lester for A-Rod deal, saying he would put his professional reputation on the line for Lester becoming a good starter. And now here we are. What is he? It's safe to say that he's not an ace -- and it's also safe to say that we've probably seen his ceiling. I don't think we're looking at a lot of untapped potential with Lester. Either he gets back to his -- very good -- previous self, or we're stuck in this Tim Lincecum-esque quagmire, where he looks like the same guy, except he doesn't throw as hard and walks four batters a start. The only thing we can do as fans is hope Farrell can help Lester find his way out of the woods. Right now it's not looking good, but it's a long season.   On page 2, Carp's injury doesn't appear serious.   “Hopefully it’s just a cramp,” said Carp, who hurt himself swinging for a double in the seventh inning and still felt it as he advanced to third on a single. “It’s been pretty humid the last couple of days, followed by a day game. I don’t feel too concerned about it, got the rest of tonight off, tomorrow, almost two full days till we have to play again. I’m pretty confident I’ll be back in there (tomorrow).” Carp had to be removed for pinch-runner Shane Victorino. “I’ve never done anything to my legs. I don’t really consider myself fast or anything,” said Carp, who has five home runs in his last 11 games. Herald | Mike Carp joins Mike Napoli, Clay Buchholz Sounds like no big deal for Carp, who has been a pleasant surprise. If you're a Mariners fan, you pretty much have to be going nuts at this point. Everyone they bring in is a massive disappointment offensively (Chone Figgins, Justin Smoak, and Adrian Beltre among the biggest offenders in recent years) and guys they let go take off (Adam Jones, Beltre again, and now Carp for the Sox). You know what this means: Next year we're picking up Endy Chavez and coaxing an .800 OPS out of him. Globe | Napoli, Carp possible for Tuesday | Davis hits 23rd homer as Orioles beat Red Sox, 6-3 | Dustin Pedroia gets a day off | Herald | Jon Lester's woes persist as Orioles vex Red Sox again | For starters, Red Sox show decay | ESPNBoston | Pedroia sits, world trembles | Jon Lester not shaken by slump | Chris Davis, Nick Markakis lead Orioles past Red Sox
