Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. As he came to the plate in the seventh inning here Tuesday, Mike Napoli was 2-for-19 in the postseason, including 0-for-6 with six strikeouts in the AL Championship Series. Clearly, he needed to make a few adjustments. "I know he changed his pants," teammate Jarrod Saltalamacchia said. "And he rubbed Jonny's (Gomes) beard." In the future, slumping Red Sox hitters may have a new elixir. Napoli worked the count full against Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander, then clocked a 96-mph fastball over the fence in left-center field for the only run scored by either team in the Red Sox' Game 3 victory, which gave them a 2-1 edge in the best-of-seven series that continues here tonight. "That's Mike Napoli," Gomes said. "We saw it over 20 times this year. We've seen it a whole bunch in the past. That's what he's going to do. You're talking about a guy who's protecting a future Hall of Famer in David Ortiz. That bat gets through the zone hot. Power on power right there. I don't think Napoli is ever struggling, to tell you the truth. I can't look at the average on Napoli. He can go 0-for-4 and doesn't get any hits, but he sees 35 pitches and takes an inning and half off a starter. That guy is a stud.” Herald: Mike Napoli changes pants, luck in Red Sox' Game 3 win over Tigers, Verlander Glad he decided to change something that worked. It was torture to watch Mike Napoli at the plate and the only adjustment he needed last night was longer pants. Fine with me. Of all the people in the lineup, I did not expect Napoli to be the one to hit a home run off of Justin Verlander. He struck out in every at-bat in the ALCS up to that point. I pretty much wrote that at-bat off in the 7th. What a fool I was. I also did not expect John Lackey to out-pitch Justin Verlander. Yeah, I know Justin got 2 more strikeouts, and went an inning and a third longer, but Lackey didn't surrender a run, and got the win. Out-pitched! Glad to see Lackey earn about 3% of that contract. Next to Napoli's homer, the biggest moment was Tazawa striking Cabrera out on fastballs in one of the biggest clutch situations in Miguel's career. That was something of beauty and something we could credit to Napoli's pants. Why not? This series has been so damn stressful to this point and I am not sure how much more stress I can take. Hey, maybe tonight will be the night the Sox get a hit in the 4th inning!
