Found November 22, 2012 on Ted's Army:
Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. The Red Sox have too many holes in their roster to fill them all with high-profile players. That helped lead them to journeyman outfielder Jonny Gomes, who on Wednesday agreed to terms on a two-year deal worth $10 million. The contract is pending a physical. Gomes, who turns 32 on Thanksgiving, hit .262 with an .868 OPS for Oakland last season. He had 18 home runs and 47 RBIs in 333 plate appearances. The righthanded hitter has traditionally hit well against lefthanders. He is best suited as a platoon player but was Cincinnati’s full-time left fielder in 2010. While Gomes could be the regular left fielder, the Sox also have lefthanded-hitting Ryan Kalish and switch hitter Daniel Nava on their roster. Gomes hit .299 with a .974 OPS against lefthanders last season in 164 at-bats. He hit .209 with a .715 OPS against righthanders in 115 at-bats. Globe: Sox sign Gomes A bit of an overpay for Gomes, who was looking for $2-$3 million, but with the market going a little ridiculous (like Torii Hunter's 2-year deal) and the Sox have so much money to burn, so it's not a drastic overpay. Although, Cody Ross must appreciate this deal and sees this as a starting point for any other negotiations. Gomes is best known for being part of being part of the mugging of Coco Crisp back in 2008. Crisp must have forgiven him since they were teammates with Oakland last season, and that whole team appeared to be a tight knit group. Going back to Cody for a second, this signing doesn't necessarily mean he's gone. He would still be a good fit for this team as Gomes is ideally the team's fourth outfielder. Someone who can mash lefties and pepper the Monster as part of a platoon (hopefully) alongside Ryan Kalish. The Sox continue to get high character guys and if they have to spend a little more to bring them in, that's fine by me. I'd rather overspend on Gomes than spend $15 million on someone like Hiroki Kuroda.  On behalf of all of us here at Ted's Army, we'd like to thank everyone for reading and that you have a happy Thanksgiving!  Rest of the Links: Globe: Yankees sign Kuroda | Herald: Sox get a good guy in Gomes | CSNNE:Sox sign Gomes for two-year deal | WEEI: Sox land Gomes

Yesterday, the Boston Red Sox reportedly added another player in their rebuilding effort.  Susan Sussler of the San Francisco Chronicle first reported the details of the contract, and Gomes is expected to receive a two-year, $10 million deal.  The signing is just another move to realign the clubhouse's passion and desire to win with the front office's goals.  Things went...

Gomes reportedly signs two-year, $10 million contract with Boston

Jonny Gomes isn't the most talented player available on the free agent market, but he is widely regarded as being among the most personable. For the reloading Boston Red Sox, that's an important quality. And so, on the eve of Thanksgiving, the Red Sox reportedly signed Gomes to a two-year contract worth $10 million. Likewise, the role for Gomes remained unclear. A part...

Details are starting to surface about the reported latest Red Sox free-agent signing. Boston signed Jonny Gomes to a two-year, $10 million contract, as first reported by Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Gomes fills a need for the Red Sox in the outfield, and he is especially strong against left-handed pitchers. Slusser reported it was double what the A’s offered Gomes...

Red Sox ink Jonny Gomes to two-year deal

The Boston Red Sox agreed to a contract with an outfielder today, but the name isn't one that many thought would be on their radar: Jonny Gomes, a key part of the Oakland Athletics' AL West run last season. Gomes is getting a two year deal, and will make $10 million over the two seasons he's under contract. Gomes, who will turn 32 on Thursday, is an odd fit for the...

Redsocks snagging Jonny Gomes

Now and then, despite all the pain and suffering in the world, the political polarity that threatens our nation, the rising sea levels and catastrophic storms, you get a good feeling about the future. That's how I felt yesterday, as I gave thanks for Boston.  Somehow, when Team John Henry last summer sent the Billion Dollar Odd Lots & Overruns Outlet to LA, I didn't see...

Jonny Gomes and Red Sox nearing two-year deal

The Boston Red Sox are closing in on a two-year deal with free agent outfielder Jonny Gomes, Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports. Jonny Gomes Signing Shows Red Sox Are Now Really Playing Moneyball

Forget what you know about the lore of the Boston Red Sox’ 2000s success. Even in the movie Moneyball, itself, the film’s post script contains a note that Boston won its 2004 world championship on the back of Billy Beane-like principles. Likewise, Theo Epstein has been trumpeted as a computer-geek wonderboy who played the Red Sox like a deck of cards and won two high-stakes hands...

Red Sox Sign Jonny Gomes

Following a day full of rumors involving the Red Sox’ pursuit of free agent outfielders, the team agreed to a 2-year deal with outfielder Jonny Gomes on Wednesday night, according to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald and Jim Bowden of ESPN.com. The deal is pending a physical, and Gomes was rumored to be asking [...]

Knucklehead Quotient Upped for 2013

Jonny Gomes, star of many a Red Sox-Rays donnybrook and half-assed wrestling aficionado, is now part of our fightin’ nine. Terms are $10 million for two years, pending the old “turn your head and cough.” Honestly, I’ve never been much of a Gomes fan; haven’t been since that infamous dust-up between half the Rays’ bench [...]

Happy Gomesgiving

So it ain’t quite like that Thanksgiving past, when Theo and crew broke biscuits with the Schilling family. But the signing of Jonny Gomes reminds us that baseball is moving ever-closer, and we just gotta trust that Ben, like Galactus, has some sort of master plan that hopefully doesn’t include the Earth being torn part [...]

Report: Red Sox Sign Jonny Gomes To Two-Year Deal

While Daniel Nava emerged last season in the outfield and with Ryan Kalish being injury prone, the Boston Red Sox have only have one outfielder who they view as an everyday outfielder. And that is Jacoby Ellsbury. They do also have Ryan Sweeney but you have to wonder if he'll be offered a contract for next year. As for now, he's still on the 40-man roster. And like...

Red Sox Replace Carl Crawford with Polar Opposite

After years of having Manny Ramirez and then Jason Bay patrol left field in front of the Green Monster, the Red Sox made a dramatic change in course in 2011 by bringing in Carl Crawford. Instead of using the position to get another bat-first, hide-the-women-and-children defender into the line-up, the Sox opted for speed and defense instead. Crawford, of course, was a disaster,...

Black Friday musings

-Buck Showalter has been voted Manager of the Year by the Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Good for Buck, he deserves the love and the hardware. It is unfortunate that he came up short in the nationwide vote but Bob Melvin’s team did end up winning the AL West, even if they did get a ton of help from a Rangers team that folded in the last month. ...
