New York Mets top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler made his home debut for the Buffalo Bisons yesterday and his solid outing provided a bit of a distraction from the massacre that took place in Queens.  While  Johan Santana and the big league club were getting hammered by Atlanta, Wheeler was shutting down the Yankees Triple-A affiliate, allowing just 1 ER in six strong innings of work:

And Zack Wheeler is, in fact, out after 6 IP. 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K. 93 pitches (54 strikes). No decision in second AAA start. about 15 hours ago via TweetDeckReplyRetweetFavorite @AdamRubinESPN Adam Rubin

Wheeler showed the power arm that has so many fans excited to eventually see him make the jump to the majors but it wasn’t enough for the Bisons to take the victory as they eventually fell to the SWB Yanks by a score of 5-1.

Zack Wheeler hits 98 on the stadium gun in his first frame. Eduardo Nunez drives in a SWB run. #mets about 16 hours ago via HootSuiteReplyRetweetFavorite @benwag247 Ben Wagner

According to the Blake Arrington of Bisons official page:

The two hits collected by Scranton/Wilkes-Barre came from the first and third batters of the contest. Eduardo Nunez followed Chris Dickerson‘s lead-off single with a one-out double to center to give the Yanks an early lead.

After that, Wheeler was unhittable. He retired 14 of the next 15 batters he faced. The only batter to reach during that span was former Bison Darnell McDonald, who walked to lead off the third. He was quickly erased when Wheeler induced a 4-6-3 doubleplay off the bat of Dickerson.”

Mike Bundt of Queen City Sports also had a great video recap of the Wheeler’s performance along with post-game comments from Zack and his manager Wally Backman, which you can watch below.
