There was a big, bad moon rising tonight over Principal Park about the time New Orleans' Luke Montz boomed a Randy Wells s(t)inker through the teeth of the brisk zephyr blowing in off the Des Moines River to break a 1-1 tie and launch the visitors to a 7-3 series-evening win. Wells actually lowered his Iowa ERA to 8.38 while allowing three runs in his rather ordinary five inning stint. He was touched for seven hits and walked two while needing 91 pitches to labor through his outing. Only once did he retire the side in order. He did score a run after drawing a walk himself before Anthony RBIzo doubled him home to put the I-Cubs in front in the bottom of the third. Rizzo had fanned on three straight breaking balls in the first. The first pitch to him in the third was another one which he pulled sharply foul. On the fifth straight one he saw he stayed back and lined it just fair inside the line at third. Brett Jackson was back in the lineup tonight and led off in the bottom of the ...

Young Yankee fan throws Girardi ball away

A young New York Yankee fan threw away a baseball that was handed to him by Yankees manager Joe Girardi during last night's game in Kansas City against the Royals. Your browser does not support iframes. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Girardi gave the ball to a boy wearing a Yankee hat who was sitting within reach of the Yankee dugout. However, after holding the ball for...

Carlos Marmol out as Cubs closer

Blake DeWitt DFA’d

The Cubs have DFA'd Blake DeWitt and re-caled Travis Wood who will start today against the Dodgers. I don't believe Berselius published a projection for Wood, but Oliver did project him to be worth 2.5 WAR at the time the Cubs traded Sean Marshall for him. Wood has had mixed results so far at Iowa. [...]

Flu-like bug causing havoc with Cubs lineup

The Cubs have been scuffling and scrambling to find healthy bodies all weekend. No, the injury bug didn't bite them again. This time, it was a flu-like bug, and it has left manager Dale Sveum short in several areas. Over the weekend, the Cubs were forced to scratch right-hander Matt Garza from starts on Saturday and Sunday, pushing him back to the end of the week. ...

Struggling Marmol removed from closer role

Cubs manager Dale Sveum says he has decided to take Carlos Marmol out of the closer's role. Sveum says he talked to Marmol in his office on Friday morning, and the right-hander understood the decision. The first-year manager says he plans to close games by committee for now, featuring right-hander Rafael Dolis and left-hander James Russell. The move comes one day after a particularly...

Sveum: Marmol out as Cubs closer

Carlos Marmol is no longer the closer for the Chicago Cubs, manager Dale Sveum said Friday. The move came the day after Marmol blew a 3-0 ninth inning lead in a 4-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Sveum said left-hander James Russell and right-hander Rafael Dolis will share the closer duties. "I called (Marmol) into the office and told him he is not the closer right now,"...

The Children Are The Future- Cubs Minor League Update Sponsored by Post It

Iowa Brett Jackson had a good game going 2-3 with a BB and a HR. Jackson is now batting .259 on the year. I think the end might have come for Jay Jackson. He just isn't any good anymore and his 6.75 ERA suggests he might not even be a good AAA arm. Jackson's decline [...]

Dodgers topped by Cubs in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) -- Paul Maholm pitched six crisp innings for his third consecutive win and the Chicago Cubs held on for a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. Maholm (3-2) allowed one run and three hits while improving to 1-5 with a 4.91 ERA in nine career starts against Los Angeles. The left-hander has won his last three outings after dropping his first two, allowing...

Cubs 4, Dodgers 3(11)

David DeJesus drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. The win came after the teams waited out a 2-hour, 41-minute rain delay, and a ninth-inning comeback by the Cubs. Darwin Barney led off the 11th with a double. Wellington Castillo was intentionally walked and pinch-hitter Jeff...

Game 26 Thread - Maholm vs. Billingsley

Right now, the Cubs have 14 Home Runs on the year, Matt Kemp 12...the race is on. If you're in the area, apparently there are some $4 tickets available thanks to the wonders of dynamic pricing. I'd certainly pay that to Kemp play. Dodgers Cubs Gordon, SS *DeJesus, RF M. Ellis, 2B *Campana, CF Kemp, CF Castro, SS *Ethier, RF *LaHair, 1B Rivera, LF Soriano, LF...

Capuano pitches, hits Dodgers past Cubs

CHICAGO (AP) -- Chris Capuano beat the Chicago Cubs with his bat and his arm on Saturday. Guess which one he'll remember more? Capuano threw seven shutout innings and drove in two runs to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-1 win over the Cubs. Capuano (4-0) held Chicago to three hits and struck out seven, extending his scoreless innings streak to 18 2-3. His two-run double...

Braves-Cubs Preview

The Chicago Cubs' pitching staff has made a quick turnaround following a miserable start, but it might have a difficult test to start this week. That's because the hot-hitting Atlanta Braves visit Wrigley Field for a three-game series that begins Monday night. Chicago (11-17) had a 5.13 ERA during its 3-11 start to its first season under team president Theo Epstein, manager...

Series Preview: Los Angeles Dodgers of Los Angeles (17-8) at Chicago Cubs (9-16)

The Dodgers have the best record in the National league, and are only one win off of Tampa's 18-8 mark for the best in baseball. A big part of that is Matt Kemp, who is making Bryan LaHair's numbers look pedestrian this year. Kemp has hit 12 HRs to LaHair's 7, though their wOBAs aren't [...]
