With the recent injury to Troy Percival the Tampa Bay Rays needed to add a few relievers and one of them came at the expense of position player Ben Zobrist.
The team announced it had called up 30-year old reliever Grant Balfour. (not be be confused with Ball-four which is what he does on the mound) Balfour is 6-3 with a 5.44 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP during his career. He spent part of last season with the Rays but the majority of his big league playing time came as a Minnesota Twin.
Zobrist was choose for demotion not so much for his stats but due to the options left on his contract. Willy Aybar did not have any options and instead of taking the chance of losing the 25-year-old who is hitting .286/.355/.500 the team moved Zobrist instead.
