Aledmys Diaz, the Improbable All-Star

Beginning last season, there’s been a raging debate concerning the identity of baseball’s best shortstop. In fairness, I guess, people have probably been arguing about this forever, but now there’s this outstanding, new, young crop, and it’s hard to believe they all exist. There are veterans in there like Troy Tulowitzki and Brandon Crawford, but you’ve also got Carlos...

St. Louis Cardinals: Meet Aledmys Diaz

Say hello to Aledmys Diaz, the next great player out of the farm system of the St. Louis Cardinals. Through 19 games, Diaz batted a scorching and league-leading .468, which would rank as the second-highest all-time in the month of April if he keeps it up. The shortstop stumbled a bit last night in a 3-0 loss against the Arizona Diamondbacks, going 0-3. Now, in 20 games, he is only...

Pitchers Can’t Seem to Get the (A)Led(mys Diaz) Out

Note: the editor of this post played no part in the composition of its despicable title. All grievances should be directed to the author, Craig Edwards. Baseball is full of April surprises. Players who come seemingly out of nowhere. Albert Pujols was one such player back in 2001. So was Chris Shelton back in 2005, Devon Travis last year, and Trevor Story already this season. As Trevor...

But then Aledmys Diaz got written on the lineup card this afternoon. And he promptly had a day. Aledmys Diaz drives in Charlie Tilson in the top of the 9th to give #STLCards 4-2 lead....

The weight of expectations on Cardinals shortstops

Many inside and outside the St. Louis Cardinals organization are excited about the addition of infielder Aledmys Diaz. It is understandable. After all, the Cuban native is the biggest international signing in the team’s history. The 23-year-old will receive $8 million over the next four years and the hope is that he can one day succeed Jhonny Peralta at shortstop for the major...
