Rumor: The Giants wanted Phelps for Stewart
The trade for Chris Stewart was confusing and somewhat bothersome because while George Kontos wasn’t a great arm, he seemed like a lot to give up for an all glove, no hit catcher like Stewart. However if the Giants had their way, the Yankees would have given up even more.

I reached out to a good friend in the Giants organization who had this to say about new Yankees backup catcher Chris Stewart:
Chris Stewart is not only a fine guy, he does crossword puzzles. He can catch and throw but there is no bat. He will be a nice addition to the Yankee Clubhouse and will never be a trouble maker. He’s a great guy but a backup catcher, at best.

Giants trade Stewart to Yankees
Mlbtraderumors.com reported the Giants have traded backup catcher Chris Stewart to they New York Yankees for RHP George Kontos.
Stewart, 30, has been competing for the giants backup catcher position with Eli Whiteside (who missed the final cut) and rookie Hector Sanchez. Now, he returns to New York where he played one game for in 2008.
