New York Yankees right-handed reliever  David Phelps was pulled from tonight's game with the Tampa Bay Rays in the 7th inning after being hit in the hand by a Ryan Hanigan line drive. (video here). John's Takeaway Points from yesterday's loss: (Spoiler alert: It's going to be a great season)

Saturday was my first 2014 game devoted entirely to the No-Spin Zone analysis of John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman.  Obviously, it was a tough morsel to digest. When the Jays pounded David Phelps in the eighth, the deflation in Suzyn's voice was that of a child learning for the first time that Santa doesn't exist. "Ooooh, boy," she said. "Did this game ever...

New York Yankees Pineda allows 3 runs

Uh Oh Pineda I am absolutely stoked to see this name on the Yankees roster, do not get me wrong BUUUT his spring ball game against the Toronto Blue Jays was not his perfect day by any means! Allowing for 3 runs with 2 earned while pitching 6 innings isn’t the worst that could happen, however it could definitely be improved upon. For one thing Michael was known in 2011 as one of...

What Should the Yankees Do with David Phelps?

By now it seems that Michael Pineda winning the fifth spot in the rotation is simply a formality. But Pineda’s emergence as the final rotation member has emphatically been a result of his stellar work, and not an indictment of David Phelps’ work. Indeed, Phelps – who many thought would win the job – has exceeded expectations. But it still looks like he’ll come up...

Spring Training Game 13: Phelps good in tie

Tampa Bay Rays 3 — New York Yankees 3 David Phelps got the start against the Tampa Bay Rays. David Phelps limited the Rays and kept them off the scoreboard. An uneventful start by Phelps is a start that Yankees fans can live with. In five innings, David Phelps gave up just three hits without allowing a run and striking out one. Alfonso Soriano got his first hit of the Spring when...

Teams Scouting David Phelps and Catchers

There seemed to be a little curiously over David Phelps, during Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to the Orioles. Phelps started and pitched a mediocre 2.2 innings giving one earned while striking out two. During the game the Seattle Mariners had scouts in attendance while the New York Yankees were in Sarasota. With Seattle having some injures in their pitching staff and in the market for a possible...

The Seattle Mariners are looking for a new piece to add to the rotation now that injuries have derailed Taijuan Walker & Hisashi Iwakuma.  They're looking to the New York Yankees who are having a battle for the fifth rotation spot.  According to George A. King III of the New York Post:"The Mariners had a scout watch Phelps, who is the leading candidate to be the Yankees’...

Can David Phelps Earn a Spot in the Rotation?

I think most New York Yankees fans want Michael Pineda to win the spot of fifth starter. And, if he stays healthy, I think it’s fair to say he’s the favorite. But we sure as heck can’t count out David Phelps yet. Of course, Phelps had a rough 2013 – his second season in the league – but he’s hell bent on earning a spot in the rotation this year. And the early...
