First Pitch: Garrett Jones/Gaby Sanchez Could be the New Moneyball
I’ve talked about platoons a lot this week, first questioning whether Travis Snider should be in a platoon, then pointing out all of the different platoon candidates the Pirates have. In the process I noticed that the platoon at first base is working. Like, really well. Take a look at the numbers and how they stack up to the production every other team is getting from their first...
The Pirates’ new starting lineup video is hilarious
The PNC Park jumbotron has introduced the Pirates’ lineup with some strange and cheesy videos in the past (such as this one), but when I saw this new one on Youtube I couldn’t stop laughing:
So much awkwardness. Some players (Gaby Sanchez) embraced the silly Saturday Night Live theme, some (Pedro Alvarez and Clint Barmes) clearly wanted nothing to do with it, and some (Wandy...
Is Gaby Sanchez Available?
Is Gaby Sanchez really available?
Ever since the New York Yankees lost Mark Teixeira, there have been plenty of rumors connecting the Pirates to the Yankees. Most of those rumors seem to be of the message board type. One team has a need, the other team has a strength in that area, so they match up. In this case, the Pirates have a strength, the Yankees have a need, and baseball doesn’t...
Healthy Sanchez could be big plus for Pirates
First baseman Gaby Sanchez burst on the scene with the Marlins in 2010 and was an All Star in 2011. Last season he had been demoted to Triple-A and was traded to the Pirates. Sanchez was hurt and missed most of his preseason conditioning last year because he was coming off knee surgery. Now healthy again Sanchez told PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko that he is feeling great at the plate.

Sam Evans writes for Fish Stripes, a Miami Marlins site on the SB Nation network. Sam covers the Marlins prospects for Fish Stripes, and was kind enough to send over his thoughts on the Gaby Sanchez trade, with a look at the struggles from Sanchez this year, as well as more information on minor league reliever Kyle Kaminska. To see my analysis on Gorkys Hernandez, who went to Miami...
