Rookie Jared Hughes has quietly been one of the best relievers in baseball. Hughes leads all rookies with a 1.19 ERA, and has thrown 11 consecutive scoreless innings. The right-hander told PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko that being aggressive in the strike zone has helped him find success early this season.

Pirates recall Hughes to replace Meek
The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled right-hander Jared Hughes from Triple-A Indianapolis, a day after demoting struggling Evan Meek to the minors.
This is the third call-up this season for Hughes, who was recalled for a doubleheader on April 25 and sent back to the minors later in the day. Hughes has allowed two earned runs in 9 2-3 innings for a 1.68 ERA.

Karstens out with inflamed shoulder
Pittsburgh Pirates starter Jeff Karstens has left after one inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks due to shoulder inflammation.

Dumb move for Pirates to send Moskos to AAA
We told you a few days ago that there was a max of two pitching spots left and it was down to Jared Hughes, Chris Resop and Danny Moskos. Well, Moskos had his torch snuffed out and he was sent packing to Indianapolis, which means Tony Watson will be the Pirates’ only left hander out of the bullpen.

Big surprise out of Buccos’ bullpen
Seriously, did anybody that doesn’t have Pirate Parrott bed sheets know who Jared Hughes was when Spring Training started?
