Putz has strain, doesn't need elbow surgery
Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz has a sprained right ulnar collateral ligament and will be shut down for two weeks but will not require surgery on his elbow.
"I think we dodged a bullet," Putz said Thursday. "It's not great, but it could have been a lot worse."
Putz left in the ninth inning of a game against the Dodgers on Tuesday after facing one batter....

Sources: Putz opts for rehab rather than surgery
Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz, placed on the disabled list Wednesday, will attempt to rehabilitate his injured right elbow rather than undergo surgery, according to major league sources.
Putz is suffering from a sprained ligament, a strained flexor pronator and an irritated nerve, one source said. There is no timetable yet for his return.

Arizona reliever J.J. Putz has been diagnosed with a sprained ligament, a strained flexor pronator and nerve irritation in his right elbow. All of Putz’s ailments can be addressed though rehab meaning that the pitcher will not need major surgery on his right elbow.
Putz will attempt to work his way back before the end of the 2013 season.
Heath Bell has assumed the closers role...
