Mackenzie Dern showed she is far more than just a grappler at UFC Fight Night 223.


The Brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt dominated Angela Hill in all aspects of their strawweight bout en route to a lopsided unanimous decision triumph in Saturday’s headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. In addition to a dangerous submission game, Dern showcased heavy-handed standup and vicious ground-and-pound in an impressive performance against a veteran foe.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 223, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

8: Strawweight victories for Dern, tying her with Jessica Andrade and Xiaonan Yan for sixth most in UFC history in the weight class.

126: Significant strikes landed by Dern, an Ultimate Fighting Championship career best. Her previous high of 82 came in a victory against Virna Jandiroba at UFC 256. By comparison, Hill landed 66 significant strikes.

104: Signficant head strikes for Dern. Hill, meanwhile, landed just 27.

1,834: Days since Dern’s last knockdown in UFC competition, when she dropped Amanda Bobby Brundage at UFC 224. Dern scored her first knockdown since then when she floored Hill with a right hand in the opening stanza.

3: Takedowns landed in nine attempts for Dern, who also secured 13:12 of control time. Hill did not attempt a takedown but did log 7:11 of control time in defeat.

22: Total UFC strawweight bouts for Hill, the most in the history of the division. Randa Markos is No. 2 with 18.

1,820: Career significant strikes for Hill. With the 66 she landed against Dern, Hill passed Frankie Edgar for No. 2 all-time in significant strikes landed in UFC history. Max Holloway is well ahead of the field with 3,122.

4: Consecutive victories for Anthony Hernandez following his third-round TKO of Edmen Shahbazyan in the UFC Fight Night 223 co-main event. That ties him with Caio Borralho and Andre Petroski for the second-longest active winning streak in the UFC’s middleweight division behind Dricus Du Plessis (five).

25: Significant strikes landed byShahbazyan. Hernandez landed 15 significant strikes during that same time.

48: Combined significant strikes landed by Hernandez in the final two periods, when he earned a technical knockout victory 61 seconds into Round 3. Shahbazyan landed just five significant strikes in that same timeframe.

6: Takedowns landed in 15 attempts for Hernandez. “Fluffy” also attempted four submissions and logged 7:11 of control time in his victory.



244: Combined signficant strikes landed by Lupita Godinez (132) and Emily Ducote (112) in their 120-pound catchweight bout. Godinez outlanded her opponent 49 to 34 in Round 1 and 40 to 35 in Round 3, while both combatants landed 43 significant strikes in Round 2. Ultimately, Godinez emerged with a unanimous decision triumph.

106: Significant head strikes for Godinez. By comparison, Ducote landed 71.

7: Knockdowns landed in UFC competition for Joaquin Buckley after he finished Andre Fialho with a perfectly-placed head kick in his welterweight debut.

1,218: Days since Diego Ferreira’s last victory, a second-round submission of Anthony Pettis at UFC 246 on Jan. 18, 2020. The Fortis MMA product returned to the win column with a knockout of Michael Johnson in Round 2 of a featured lightweight pairing.

3: Knockdowns landed by Viacheslav Borshchev in a second-round technical knockout victory against Maheshate Hayisaer at lightweight. “Slava Claus” also outlanded his foe by an 85-to-32 count in significant strikes. Borshchev has finished six of his seven professional wins by KO or TKO.

139: Significant strikes landed by former strawweight title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz in a three-round verdict against Vanessa Demopoulos. Kowalkiewicz connected on 58% of her attempts while landing 94 significant strikes to the head, 30 to the body and 15 to the legs. By comparison, Demopoulos landed 68 significant strikes at a 30% success rate.

83: Total strikes landed by Gilbert Urbina in a dominant Round 1 against Orion Cosce at welterweight. Urbina also went 2-for-2 on takedowns and held a 20-to-1 edge in significant ground strikes. Urbina finished his foe with a kick to the body and knees at the 2:55 mark of Round 2.

149: Significant strikes landed by Chase Hooper in a unanimous decision triumph over Nick Fiore in his lightweight debut. That’s a career high in eight UFC appearances for Hooper, who has been known primarily as a grappler during his promotional tenure. Fiore, meanwhile, landed 51 significant strikes in defeat. Hooper also held a 217-to-58 edge in total strikes landed.

1: Takedown landed in 10 attempts for Hooper, who entered Saturday with a 26% success rate on takedowns in his UFC career. Fiore landed four of his eight takedown attempts but was largely outgunned on the feet.

11:15: Total control time for Themba Gorimbo in a three-round verdict over Takashi Sato at welterweight. By comparison, Sato logged just 2:21 of control time in defeat. Gorimbo landed three of eight takedowns and outlanded his foe by a 110-to-56 count in total strikes.
