Today has got to be one of the busiest days mixed martial arts has experienced in quite some time. Late Tuesday night, a heavyweight shootout between Cheick Kongo (Pictured) and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was announced for UFC 149.
While a secret source broke the news with the CalgarySun, the UFC subsequently endorsed the report by re-tweeting the article on their Canadian account.
Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada will host the July 21st festivities.
Kongo was upset by Mark Hunt at UFC 144 in February. The bout marked the 36-year-old’s first defeat since getting submitted by Frank Mir in December 2009.
Nogueira has alternated between wins and losses over his past six scraps. He was last seen getting his right arm snapped in two by Mir at UFC 140. The former interim champion had surgery in December and has been on the mend ever since.
Jose Aldo was expected to headline the show, but the featherweight king will likely be moved to UFC 147. It’s possible light heavyweight champ Jon Jones will defend his throne against Dan Henderson in the card’s featured attraction.
Here are the athletes expected to perform in the Octagon’s debut in Calgary:
Mitch Clarke vs. Anton Kuivanen
George Roop vs. Antonio Carvalho
Bryan Caraway vs. Mitch Gagnon
Court McGee vs. Nick Ring
Jon Fitch vs. Aaron Simpson
Thiago Alves vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cheick Kongo
