As the old adage goes, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” If seemingly top contender Chris Weidman is granted a title shot against UFC middleweight king Anderson Silva, Weidman would not hesitate to recruit Chael Sonnen (Pictured) to help him prepare for the baddest 185-pounder in bare feet. “I definitely would,” Weidman said on UFC Tonight of bringing in Sonnen. “If he was willing to train, which I’m sure he would, that would be good. He did take it to Anderson for a full fight and got caught at the end, so he’s been in the ring with him, he knows how Silva works. “I’m sure I’d get a lot of information from him and get a good idea of where I’m at.” Through 16 unblemished UFC fights, 11 being of the championship variety, Sonnen is the only man who has made Silva seem human. He dominated “The Spider” for nearly five full rounds at UFC 117, but was caught in a Hail Mary submission with only 110 ticks remaining on the clock. Sonnen didn’t enjoy nearly as much success in July’s highly anticipated rematch, but Weidman still believes Sonnen may have discovered the blueprint to dethroning the UFC’s most decorated athlete. Just leave the spinning back-fist tips at home… Weidman has already torn a page out of the Chael P. trash-talking handbook. He has continued to accuse Team Silva of ducking him because “The All-American” knows he’s a bad matchup for Silva. “They don’t mention my name, ever. They don’t want to fight me. They’re running,” Weidman claimed. “In a perfect world, I’d be back July 4th weekend against Anderson Silva. Then I’ll grant him an immediate rematch at Madison Square Garden in New York.” Weidman is recovering from a November shoulder surgery that will have him sidelined until March. He owns a perfect 9-0 professional résumé.
