One step at a time when it comes to Nick Diaz (Pictured). The UFC cleared the first hurdle Wednesday when they actually got Diaz to attend a pre-fight press conference in Canada. The next roadblock, which has proven to be even more troublesome, is whether the habitual medical marijuana smoker will pass his post-fight drug exam. Diaz was issued a 12-month suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission last February after they discovered marijuana metabolites in his system for the second time in five years. Diaz was subsequently rewarded with an immediate shot at UFC welterweight king Georges St-Pierre’s throne upon his return. When asked if he would take any extra precautions to ensure he didn’t flunk his drug test for UFC 158, the controversial welterweight danced around the question by discussing how he enjoyed his extended hiatus, a period Diaz dubbed as “happy time.” UFC president Dana White wasn’t nearly as elusive as Diaz when probed. However, White revealed he isn’t about to go out of his way to babysit the 29-year-old to make sure he stays clean, either. “Listen, I’m not his father,” White stated following the presser. “I mean, it would be crazy [if Diaz tested positive again] but, it’s like when I talk to the media and stuff sometimes they’re like, ‘What are you going to do about steroids? Or what are you going to do about this, what are you going to do about that?’ I’ve got 475 guys under contract that live all over the world, I’m not your father. “We’re regulated by the government, the government comes in and regulates us. If you do steroids, if you smoke weed, if you do any other banned substance, you’re going to get caught, you’re going to get fined and you’re going to lose the ability to make a living for a year. I mean, I don’t know what else to say.” Diaz dropped a unanimous decision to Carlos Condit for the interim welterweight title before his failed screening. Can you imagine the mess Mr. 209 would have made had he won? What about if he beats St-Pierre at UFC 158 and marijuana metabolites magically appear again? “It would be [expletive] brutal. It would be brutal,” White stated. “I don’t know what we would do. I would want to jump off a bridge.” Diaz challenges GSP for his crown on March 16th inside Bell Centre in Montreal. It is the most anticipated 170-pound shootout in MMA history.
