Earlier today, news broke out that former middleweight title challenger Yushin Okami had been released by the UFC. The Japanese fighter compiled a 13-5 record inside the octagon and was 3-1 in his last four fights yet was coming off a devastating loss to Ronaldo Souza at UFC Fight Night 28 three weeks ago.
White explained his decision to release the No. 6 middleweight to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports earlier today:
“He’s been with us forever.” White said about Okami. “He was always a tough guy and was right up there, but it’s almost like he’d become a gatekeeper. I like Okami, and you’ve heard me say this many times, that a win over Yushin Okami meant something. But, he was never able to get over the hump and win one of those [significant] fights.”
Okami holds wins over Evan Tanner, Mark Munoz and Nate Marquardt among others and is likely to get another opportunity to return to the company, granted that he is able to put together a sting of victories elsewhere. As it currently stands,...
