So there’s this subculture of Mixed Martial Arts known as Arrows street fighting that allows any MMA fighter to participate in the one day tournament so long as they show up the day of the fight, are 18-years of age or older, and pass a physical. The bouts take place in a homemade ring with a sand floor, and just as you’d imagine, this type of backyard MMA fighting is big in Russia. On this particular day, at this particular tournament, Max Baltrushin’s opponent failed to show for their match, so the referee asked the crowd if anyone would be willing to take the absent fighter’s place. Normally there wouldn’t be much of a response from the audience outside a few hoots, hollers and catcalls, but this being Russia and all, a fan in the stands by the name of Dmitry Dzubiy answered the ref’s challenge, and the two squared off in their impromptu match. And it went just how you’d expect it to go, except totally different, as the seemingly amateur Dzubiy knocked out Baltrushin a mere :28 seconds into the fight. ASQ Knowing this is Russia, where insane happenings are a part of everyday life, and the suspension of disbelief is a regular occurrence, but it’s hard to say if this 100% legit. The veracity of the fight’s backstory comes into question because a) it’s clear that Dzubiy has had some marital arts training, and b) he brought his own gloves, shorts and mouthpiece. I don’t want to call shenanigans on this, perhaps the ballsiest of ballsy moves in the history of mano-e-mano combat, but even in Russia it’s hard to ignore the facts.
