UFC welterweight Jake Shields got back on the winning track with a unanimous decision win over Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 144. The win snapped a two fight losing streak and evened his record in the UFC to 2-2.
Shields, a former Strikeforce middleweight champion, has been mulling the possibility to returning to the 185 weight class. He has competed only at welterweight while in the UFC.
Shields believe that he has always been caught in the middle of the welterweight and middleweight divisions. He is currently working on putting on the “right” weight and says that while he can make welterweight the cut affects his strength.
Shields hopes to have a decision within the next couple of weeks on whether he will remain at welterweight or make the move back to middleweight. Whichever weight class he decides to compete in, Shields wants to face a top 5 opponent in his next bout.
