UFC president Dana White has long professed that mixed martial arts is a young man’s game. However, former welterweight top contender Josh Koscheck (Pictured) believes he’s just now hitting his prime at the tender age of 34.
Between his bitter divorce from American Kickboxing Academy to opening up his own gym in Fresno, California to fighting an up-and-coming 28-year-old slugger this Saturday, the controversial wrestler wasn’t short on motivation heading into “UFC on FOX 3.” Oh yeah, don’t forget to tack on the haters in the press who have written the veteran off.
“I have other ulterior motives that motivate me,” Koscheck admitted to a small group of media. “Like a lot of you people out here who write all these stories and [expletive] like, “’Oh, he’s old, he’s this, youth vs. age.’
“[BS]. You guys are all [expletive] retards who think that. I mean, retards. I’ve been hearing a lot of it, a lot of tweets and [expletive]. I laugh at you idiots. Who’s the guy, Bernard Hopkins? Didn’t he just kick someone’s ass the other day? And how old is he?
No, B-Hop actually lost his belts to Chad Dawson this past weekend.
“Oh, he lost?” a puzzled Koscheck asked. “Well, I mean, he was the champion, right? How old is that guy, 47? Come on, he’s still fighting. Let’s be real.”
Understood, but don’t you believe guys like Hopkins are the exception and not the rule?
“Look at Randy Couture. Is that a rare case?” Koscheck probed. “Dan Henderson is 40. Is that a rare case? Chuck Liddell was what, 37-38, right? Oh, real rare. You guys are retards for writing that [expletive].”
With the omission of 37-year-old middleweight king Anderson Silva, the UFC’s remaining title holders average just 27.16 years of age. Perhaps that’s why some in the MMA media have closed the door on Kos’ chances of donning a belt. Whatever the rationale might be, Koscheck is on a mission to silence his detractors.
“Every one of you, counting me out, I love it,” he boasted. “Keep counting me out. I’ll be fighting for like four or five more years. Every time you write a story about me, just say I’m too old, too washed up, too many fights, too many miles.
“I like that because I’ve got a lot of people to prove wrong on Saturday night. And I’m looking at every one of you. You guys are all probably writing that [expletive] about me. So keep writing it.”
Koscheck co-headlines the UFC’s third show on primetime TV opposite Johny Hendricks. FOX will broadcast the main card live beginning at 8PM ET/5PM PT.
