At Mark Munoz’s Reign Training Center, they stress the Five D’s – (no, not Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge) Desire, Direction, Discipline, Diligence and Dedication. The tagline is plastered throughout the state-of-the-art facility to remind his star-studded squad that they are the ones who determine their own fate. Munoz leaned on his Five D’s heavily to get his career back on track. “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” was efficiently making his way up the UFC middleweight totem pole having rattled off four consecutive victories. Then, Munoz’s rapid ascent hit some turbulence when he underwent elbow surgery that forced him to ride the pine for eight months. He returned last July to face Chris Weidman in a critical shootout. In addition to the extended layoff, Munoz was secretly hampered by a stress fracture in his foot that played a significant part in his poor performance.  Following the devastating TKO loss, which subsequently scored Weidman a shot at Anderson Silva’s 185-pound crown, Munoz was immobilized for several months because of his foot injury. He then added a sixth D to his Five D’s philosophy – Depression. So what does one do when they’re debilitated and depressed? Well, Munoz ate. And ate, and ate, and ate… “I was up to 260 pounds before I saw Todd [Norman], and now I’m 199 pounds,” Munoz told 5thRound.com. “I started January 15, so it took about five months. “I went from obese to a beast.” Norman, who owns Cutting Edge Athletics, which is conveniently located right next door to Reign, spearheaded Munoz’s dramatic five-month transformation. Think about the change for a second. At the beginning of the year, Munoz was seven pounds away from getting disqualified from competing in a heavyweight MMA fight. He’s now a lean, mean, middleweight Filipino wrecking machine. Munoz tries to propel himself back into title contention next Saturday when he battles Tim Boetsch at UFC 162. If looks could kill, Boetsch might be in some serious trouble.
