On Wednesday morning, the Nevada State Athletic Commission temporarily suspended welterweight Nick Diaz (Pictured) after testing positive for marijuana on his UFC 143 drug screening. It was his second flunked exam in five years.

Nevada deputy attorney general Christopher Eccles requested the ban, which was then unanimously approved by the commission. Nevada’s governing body will hold a meeting later this year to determine Diaz’s fate.

Diaz, who was not present during today’s festivities, will be able to present a defense at that time. The troubled 28-year-old does have a medical marijuana license in the state of California.

When they reconvene, the commission requested to have additional information surrounding Diaz’s failed test from February of 2007. Following his upset victory over Takanori Gomi at Pride 33, the NSAC suspended Diaz for six months, overturned his win to a no contest and docked him 20 percent of his purse when marijuana metabolites were discovered in his system.

The NSAC also asked for details on Diaz’s full UFC 143 fight purse and any additional bonuses he may have received. Past fighters who tested positive for marijuana on two occasions in Nevada were banned for one year and fined 40 percent of their purse.

It was initially believed Diaz would just lose a chunk of his $200,000 ‘show purse,’ but it’s possible the commission could be looking for more since they requested more elaborate financial numbers.

Diaz lost a controversial unanimous decision to Carlos Condit at UFC 143. The February 4th interim welterweight title scrap took place inside Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
