Chael Sonnen is living a charmed life.  Let me rephrase that, Chael Sonnen is living THE charmed life.  6-6 as a UFC fighter, yet seemingly always in title contention, Chael has proven that the business of fighting, is still very much about business.  He’s lost twice to Anderson Silva, the second time convincingly.  He was taken apart by Jon Jones.  He won a VERY questionable decision against Michael Bisping and has only stopped one fighter (Brian Stann) since 2007.  With all those facts considered, Chael Sonnen finds himself in the main event of a MASSIVE UFC show on the debuting Fox Sports One network this Saturday night.  He’ll be facing the battle tested and somewhat one dimensional fighter, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, who has solid standup, limited takedown defense, and is habitually low on fuel.  If Chael fights smart, and goes for the takedown and works his top game, he should hold Rua in place and use his head for target practice on the mat.  It’s a fight tailor made for Sonnen. For Rua to pull off the upset, he’s going to have to buck the recent trend of running low on gas, taking an early beating, and trying to rally late.  Chael is just too good a wrestler to play tag standing with Rua, and having Chael on top of you, is like having an angry alligator dropped on your chest. Shogun, despite his BJJ credentials, hasn’t submitted anyone from his back, since, well….ever.  He knee-barred Kevin Randleman once, but it was from the top position.  So don’t pencil in any dramatic triangle or armbars from the bottom Saturday night.Assuming Chael wins this fight, there has been a lot of talk of him and Wanderlei Silva facing off.   While that fight would be good for ratings, it might likely be a similar fight to what he’ll have with Shogun.  Lots of takedowns, and unfortunately for Silva, it would be a long night.  Now, that said, defeating Shogun at 205, and Wand at 185 doesn’t a number one contender make, UNLESS you’re Chael P. Sonnen.  He can spin those two wins into a title shot, especially against Chris Weidman if he’s able to once again, capture lightning in a bottle.  Long story short, Chael Sonnen could be two wins away from another title shot.  Sometimes you don’t have to always walk the walk, if you talk the talk better than anyone who has ever talked it before you.  Chael Sonnen is a charismatic, well spoken, intelligent man, and he made a promise to his father about wearing championship gold.  He works hard, and that hard work could bring him UFC gold in 2014.  If not, enjoy him while he’s here, because while they might be building the next Anderson Silva in a gym in Brazil, or the next GSP up in Canada…there is no replacement for Chael Sonnen on the way.  He’s part carny, part used car salesmen, part pro wrestler and entirely an entertainer.  You can’t replace that in the gym. Some people dislike Chael, some people love him.  I ride the fence more often than not, but realistically, how can I not like him?  I’m a lifelong pro wrestling fan.  I love MMA.  He embodies the best of both of those worlds.  His one on one with Joe Rogan is the funniest interview I’ve ever seen.  The car analogy when discussing Josh Koscheck and the story about the Nogs feeding carrots to busses were both instant classics. Chael Sonnen meets Shogun Rua in the main event Saturday night from Boston, Ma.  If he wins, he could be one more fight away from another title shot.  Love him or hate him, you know you’ll be watching.  He’s just that damn entertaining.
