Not unlike singer/songwriter/actor Tom Waits - Wanderlei Silva is big in Japan. After a six year absence from the world famous Saitama Super Arena, "The Axe Murderer" would return to turn back the clock, and oh did he ever.  It was one of those magical nights in MMA history.

Wanderlei Silva and Brian Stann were a match made in hell. The end result saw both men receiving a fight of the night bonus and one of the most beloved figures of our sport living to fight another day in the UFC. Let's break it down. 

The Stats:

Both men touched each other with 43 significant strikes a piece. Stann hit Silva 57% of the time he intended to while Silva came in at 52%. Both impressive. Wand went for two take downs in the fight after feeling Stann's power but was unable to complete either of them. He recovered well though, well enough to land two knockdowns to Stann's one.  Which leads us to -

The Finish:

Wanderlei Silva improves to 35-12-1 after his KO of the night performance over Brian Stann. It was a right hook from Silva that knocked Stann down followed by a left and a few more to the side of the head that forced Stann to take one of the shortest naps of his life. The whole first round was just a monster flurry - a "Sandstorm." The two men showed a little more respect in the 2nd until Wand was able to land the finishing strikes of the fight. Stann falls to 12-6 which puts him on a two fight losing skid for the first time since since the WEC light heavyweight and middleweight divisions were eliminated and Captain Stann was transferred. The finish came at the 4:08 marker of the second round. The fight may have lasted just under ten minutes but we were given enough action in this fight alone to trump everything that happened inside of the cage before it.

What's Next?:

I'd like to see Wanderlei stay at light heavyweight after this performance. He's not going on a title run anytime soon at 185 so why bother cutting all of that weight this late in his career. Plus, he just looks better at 205. How does a match up between Wanderlei Silva and Forrest Griffin sound to you guys? Two of the biggest stars in the history of the sport closer to the end than the beginning who still love to stand and bang. If there was ever a fight for the fans this would be the one. If Silva does decide to go back down to middleweight a fight against the winner of Belcher vs. Bisping would make sense. If Bisping wins I know he would love a rematch against Wanderlei. He's been public about it and he feels like he was robbed by the judges in their first fight back at UFC 110. If Belcher wins I'm sure he'd love to test himself against the legend, who wouldn't?  For Stann this fight at 205 was one shot. He got his wish to spend sometime inside of the Octagon with Wanderlei and he should have no shame in the final result. Silva and Stann delivered the best fight of 2013 so far, and somewhere down the line I wouldn't even mind seeing a sequel. But for now, it's time for Stann to head back to middleweight.
