Chris Buescher draws hilarious Lightning McQueen comparison after close finish at Kansas

Chris Buescher suffered some heartbreak at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, by virtue of the closest finish in Cup Series history.

They say second place is the first loser, and Buescher certainly feels that agony at the moment. The No. 17 was 0.001 seconds away from his first win of the season, but Kyle Larson bested him in an incredible moment. Larson and Buescher were beating and banging on their way to the line, and the No. 5 got the win.

At least Buescher had a sense of humor about the entire thing though. Afterwards, he took to X (formerly known as Twitter), where he made a reference to Lightning McQueen of the Cars franchise, making a lighthearted quip about the photo-finish.

“Guess I should’ve pulled a Lightning McQueen and stuck out my tongue,” Buescher posted on X, referencing the famous scene from the Cars franchise.

Alas, the joke stems from a photo of Lightning McQueen, the main character of the Cars franchise, capturing a win in a similar photo-finish by sticking out his tongue. The scene was referenced earlier this season as well, when the three-wide finish took place at Atlanta, where Daniel Suarez was victorious.

Nevertheless, Chris Buescher is a good sport about coming so close and being the runner up, but that doesn’t mean he’s not sore about the finish as we move forward. The No. 17 is still looking for his first win in 2024, while Kyle Larson continues to accumulate trophies.

Kyle Larson drops epic Kentucky Derby tweet after incredible win over Chris Buescher at Kansas

In other news, Kyle Larson shared a great reaction to his win at Kansas Speedway on Sunday. The NASCAR driver went to X (formerly known as Twitter) to reveal the photo finish of his victory. Larson also put the photo next to the finish of Saturday’s photo finish at the Kentucky Derby.

“That race from start to finish was amazing,” Larson said following the win, per NASCAR.com. “That first stage was incredible. The second stage at the end was fun, and then that whole last stage with the wrecks and cautions and then fuel strategy and tires running long and all that was wild.

“You guys got your money’s worth today, and I’m just proud to be a part of the show.”

Moreover, Larson is having a strong 2024 Cup Series season. Along with winning on Sunday, Larson finished second in the Dover race last week. He won the race in Las Vegas in the third week of the year and recorded top-five finishes in three additional races.

Later this month, Larson will compete in the Indianapolis 500. In April, the 31-year-old spoke to reporters about testing for the race.

“It felt good. Just good to get laps and get in some traffic, and to visually see what that looked like, to feel the runs and the dirty air a little bit,” Larson said, per Motorsports Wire.“I feel like I learned quite a bit there and still have a lot to learn. It’s been a good morning so far. By yourself, [the car] has a lot of grip. In traffic, it was good.

“The first time I got in traffic, the balance felt normal. I didn’t feel like I went into a big transition from clean air to dirty air, but the last time, I was super tight. It was good to experience to feel what that felt like.”
