Anybody remember this? It was 2008 and Joey Logano, who wasn’t ready for a full-time Sprint Cup schedule, was being promoted by Home Depot for his 2009 full-time Sprint Cup schedule with Joe Gibbs Racing because Tony Stewart was leaving for life as a driver/owner. I now feel comfortable saying Logano wasn’t ready because the young man labeled “sliced bread” failed to make the Chase even once in four years despite driving for a marquee owner and sponsor. Instead, he’s been learning on the job, and there’s nothing necessarily wrong with that — unless there’s another option. It would’ve been better to put a Ken Schrader or Sterling Marlin in the car for most of the ’09 season, give Logano the occasional Cup start and let him find his way in the Nationwide Series for a full season. (For those who discount the more gradual approach, see Sam Hornish Jr.) But as the above ad proves, an impatient sponsor won, as it normally does.
