Martin Truex Jr. was on the provisional pole. He stood watching, crossing his fingers in anticipation during Busch’s run. Busch was the last car out and set a new track record of 138.766 for not only the tracks new configuration but the old one as well. This is the No.18 teams second pole of the 2012 season. Current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points leader, Jimmie Johnson struggled to have a solid qualifying run and will start 24th, while Brad Keselowski will start in front of him in 14th position. J.J Yeley  failed to qualify.
