Found March 06, 2013 on Race Review Online:
The 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup season has been very kind to Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt is off to his second best start to a season in his Sprint Cup career and best since that special year of 2004. In ’04, Earnhardt won the season opening Daytona 500 and backed that up with a fifth place finish at Rockingham Speedway. After those two races Junior sat a top the points standings going into the third race of the season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Similar to ’04, Junior finished runner-up at Daytona and followed that up with a fifth place finish at the Phoenix International Raceway in the second race of the season last week. He currently sits eight points behind teammate Jimmie Johnson for the points lead entering this weekend’s race in Las Vegas. All Earnhardt would have to do Sunday is finish better than 35th and he would be off to his best start of the season during his 15-year career. The reason for that number is that in ’04, Earnhardt finished a disappointing 35th place at Vegas. All he has to do is beat that this weekend, which is highly likely. That would be huge for NASCAR as Earnhardt is the most popular driver in the sport and would give Junior Nation hope for his first Cup championship of his career. The NASCAR world went crazy when he ended his four-year winless drought at Michigan International Speedway on Fathers Day last June as ticket sales spiked for races after that. That could have a similar affect is he were to win on Sunday or get his best start of any season he’s ever had leaving Vegas. Oh and by the way, he won the fourth race of the season that year as well in the Golden Corral 500 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. NASCAR no longer visits Atlanta in the spring anymore but if there’s any place that’s as big of Earnhardt fans in the world it’s this year’s fourth race of the season at Bristol Motor Speedway. Earnhardt is very good at Bristol and he could back a good finish up at Vegas with a win at the “Worlds Fastest Half Mile.” That would help attendance for that race dramatically. It’s safe to say it’s good to be a fan in Junior Nation right now. He’s battling for wins every week and could be on the cusp of a title.
