The nature of the comment Jeremy Clements made to draw an indefinite suspension from NASCAR officials has been the source of debate throughout the sport.
On Thursday, Clements admitted to a reporter that it was racial in nature, but not in relation to anyone.
"When you say 'racial' remark, it wasn't used to describe anybody or anything," Clements told ESPN.com. "So that's all I'm going to say to that. And it really wasn't. I was describing racing, and the word I used was incorrect and I shouldn't have said it. It shouldn't be used at all."
Reports on Jalopnik and Deadspin say the reporter involved was MTV's Marty Beckerman, but that the comment was not made during an interview and was not recorded.
Apparently, according to the various reports, Clements, a NASCAR representative and Beckerman were the only three party to the comment. Jalopnik is reporting that Beckerman has confirmed he is the reporter involved and that he will be writing on the incident.
