Start ‘N’ Park Blog is taking a look back at the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver by driver. This recap will take a look at the driver’s stats, the season’s highlights, the season’s lowlights, what a quick look at next year. This installment takes a look back at Carl Edwards who finished in the 15th place in the final standings. 2012 Statistics: Points: 1,030 Position: 15th Preseason Pick: 1st Starts: 36 Poles: 1 Wins: 0 Top 5s: 3 Top 10s: 13 DNFs: 2 Earnings: $5,344,175 What Was Said Prior To The Season: “Here’s my man for the title in 2012. I saw a lot in defeat that shows me Carl Edwards has not only the team, but the character to be a Sprint Cup Series champion. His Nationwide schedule will be reduced which will allow more time to focus on the Cup Series next year. The team remains intact, and with the loss of a team that should put more talented people working on his car. What he needs to change is the winning, one win in 2011, and on the last race of the season he found out first hand second place really is the first loser.” What Happened In 2012: Disappointment does not begin to describe Edwards’ 2012 season. He was supposed to be the guy in 2012, he even started off with three top 10 finishes in the first five races. Then the bottom fell out and Edwards sort of lost his way out there. Teammates Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth each got wins and into the Chase, where Edwards only got three top five finishes. He will have a new crew chief after Bob Osbourne left in the middle of the year. Maybe a shake up there/new voice to Edwards can get him out of his funk. I personally think he needs to run the Nationwide Series to help him on Sundays, something he only did once (and won) this year. On To 2013: You can only go up from here for Edwards, plus he won’t have the expectations that come from just missing the title. He’s further the elder statesmen at Roush Fenway Racing with Kenseth leaving, so it is time for him to drive like he’s the man for the team.
