Start ‘N’ Park Blog is taking a look back at the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver by driver. This recap will take a look at the driver’s stats, the season’s highlights, the season’s lowlights, what a quick look at next year. This installment takes a look back at Dave Blaney who finished in the 33rd place in the final standings. 2012 Statistics: Points: 417 Position: 33rd Preseason Pick: 30th Starts: 34 Poles: 0 Wins: 0 Top 5s: 0 Top 10s: 0 DNFs: 19 Earnings: $2,935,774 What Was Said Prior To The Season: “Dave Blaney will return in 2012, but Golden Corral will not. I’m saddened by this because they were the reason we had one of the best moments of 2011. After drafting with Blaney all race long at the Daytona 500, Kevin Harvick said ‘I’m going to have nightmares about kids eating free.’ Since the Golden Corral gimmick was if Blaney got a top 10, kids eat free the next day. Little did they know they would have to pony up on that promotion later in the year. I’m still confused why Tommy Baldwin doesn’t just go back to being a crew chief rather than losing hair and money trying to run his own team. Because that totally worked out great for Ray Evernham and all. But, with that said, I give him a lot of credit for fighting the good fight out there week in and week out.” What Happened In 2012: I sort of rambled in my pre-season statement on Blaney, but that actually works for how his season went. Everyone thought he’d win the Daytona 500 because he was leading during a red flag, only to have them continue the race. He did his usual run in the top 15 at restrictor plate tracks, then go high 20s/low 30s the rest of the time. Again I praise TBR for not just tossing in the towel and parking each week. On To 2013: Blaney’s future is uncertain, as like Reutimann, I assume he’ll be back with TBR, but nothing is official. Since he was moved around and replaced for a couple of races, I’m not sure if that is a good sign for him.
