According to TNT/NBA TV’s David Aldridge, the Pacers have renounced the rights to point guard A.J. Price. Indiana had extended a qualifying offer to Price for $1.09 million before free agency began. With that now off the table, this brings us to two scenarios.
This could give the Pacers some extra money to use to match Portland’s offer for Roy Hibbert. This doesn’t give the Pacers as much flexibility as they want, but it could be just the first step to that process. I expect Indiana to renounce Leandro Barbosa’s rights before Hibbert signs his offer sheet July 11.
The other option could be using the extra money from Price to get another free agent. This could be OJ Mayo, Courtney Lee, Lou Williams, Chris Kaman, or some other free agent on the open market. I see this as an unlikely option for the Pacers as an extra million won’t get you that far with a free agent.
Thank you A.J. for all of your hard work for the Pacers. Good luck with your future endeavors.
