2008-2009 Denver Nuggets season preview and fantasy impact, courtesy of Fantasy Insider Online. Read the team preview here in the Yard, and then visit the FIO link for the rest. - Dan Rossi Last Season Recap: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly The Nuggets had their first full season of the A.I.-Melo duo and got some mixed results. The tandem combined for 52.3 points a night as they led one of the more potent offenses in the NBA last year. The Nuggets won 50 games behind an offense that brought in 110.7 points per game, which was the second most in the league behind Golden State. The problem was they also allowed 107 points to their opponents, which was again second to the Warriors. Despite having Defensive Player of the Year candidate Marcus Camby and a comeback from Kenyon Martin, teams tore through the Nuggets on a nightly basis. Things reached a low point as the Lakers scorched Denver for 459 points during their four-game sweep, which made Denver the first 50-win team to get swept in the playoffs. The Nuggets finished four games behind Utah in the Northwest Division and outlasted Golden State in a long fight for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. 2008 Draft Impact (None) Denver had no draft picks on a roster with the average age of 27. With the departure of Camby to the Clippers, no player other than Allen Iverson is over 30-years-old. With that being said, the Nuggets haven't had an impact player taken in the draft since Carmelo Anthony in 2003. Off-Season Impact Moves Camby was dealt to the Clippers in a salary dumping move that took $10 million off of the books. This move is a head scratcher in an on-the-court sense because the Denver defense is bad enough as it is with Marcus Camby's three blocks and 13 rebounds per game. Now the paint will be manned by always on the mend Kenyon Martin and Nene Hilario, who is coming off of a season in which he only played 16 games after battling testicular cancer. Melo and A.I. had better plan on scoring more points this year as stopping other teams will be tough on George Karl's team. Preview for the 2008-2009 Season Team MVP: Allen Iverson, G - Sure, Carmelo Anthony is the face of the franchise, but Iverson is the one who runs the show. Iverson led the team in points, minutes, assists, and steals last year, and has the most playoff experience of almost anyone on the roster (Kenyon Martin was in two NBA Finals with the Nets). Iverson has also shown maturity in being able to share the offensive load with Melo without any public blow-ups or talks of "practice." Breakout Player: J.R. Smith, SG - The 22-year-old Smith provided a sharpshooter off the bench last year, as he averaged double-figures (12.3 ppg) in just 19 minutes per game. He shot 46% from the field last year and hit 157 three-pointers to boot. Things should go up this season, as he averaged 18.3 ppg and shot 53% from the field in the playoffs against L.A. thanks to a bump in minutes (27 mpg). Bust Player: Nene Hilario, F/C - This is based off of his inability to stay healthy consistently during his six-year career. In the past four seasons, Nene has not played in more than 64 games and has missed significant time during two of the past three years. He would be low-risk if he weren't the team's new starting center. Playoff Contender or Pretender? The Nuggets have a talented and young roster, but there is no way this team will be advancing far in the playoffs. Teams that don't play defense typically don't win titles (look at Phoenix under Mike D'Antoni, and this team will not be stopping any opponents this season. Even with its two superstars, this team might not even make the playoffs in the stacked Western Conference.

George Karl is the law bringer!

So, according to the Boston Globe , NBA sources are saying that George Karl has laid down the law to his two All-Stars, Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson . Apparently he told both Iverson and Anthony that "they would have to make a stronger effort to get their teammates more involved ...

Best Fantasy Basketball Players for the 2008 Season

5) LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers Although LeBron James is probably the best player in the NBA, he does have a few fantasy flaws – including free throw percentage and turnovers. He's still a beast who you'd always love to have on your side. 4) Marcus Camby, Denver Nuggets When it came to reboun...

NBA Player Threatens Fans for Exercising their Right to Free Speech

Two Denver Nuggets fans claim that after hearing himself called a chump for not being suited up for the game, Kenyon Martin sent a friend into the stands to deal with the fans. The friend approached two men, started making derogatory comments and allegedly said: "You're going to get hurt, white boy."...

Nuggets Living on the Edge

The Denver Nuggets played an impressive game on Saturday against the Golden State Warriors. Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points and Marcus Camby had 17 rebounds. If they can go into their game against the Portland Trailblazers with the same kind of energy then the Nuggets will secure a playoff spot and ...

A Great Win for So Many Reasons

(AP Photo/Steve Slocum)(Boulder-CO) Sure, last night's game was great for the Nuggets' outlook in Northwest Divisional race , but it was more important that just a win or a loss to this Denver Nuggets franchise. By beating Portland in overtime, 105-103, the Denver Nuggets, even without Marcus Camby,...

What to Do With Nene?

I received an interesting trade offer today in one league - Nene Hilario for Gerald Wallace. It's a ridiculous offer at first glance, but if you take a look at the numbers, Nene is actually outplaying Wallace this season. In fact, Nene is currently outplaying most of the NBA. Through 7 games he's 11th on [...]

Beware False Idols

Carmelo Anthony's drinking and driving bust is not a big deal in the grand scheme of the Nuggets season. The fact that he didn't kill anyone is amazing and if you have ever seen how these idiot basketball freaks drive when they're sober, it's amazing this is his first reckless driving charge. Too give you an idea of how bad it is, I once saw JR Smith Drive over a...

Sixers Spoil Iverson's Homecoming

The Philly fans welcomed Allen Iverson back with open arms, but the Sixers as a team proved to be less accommodating. Despite Iverson's 32 points and 8 assists, the Sixers continued their hot streak by defeating the Nuggets 115-113. Andre Miller, one of the players acquired in the Iverson trade, led the way for Philly, netting 28 points, and tallying 12 assists. The game fittingly...

2008-2009 Top 10 Small Forwards

The small forward position has evolved over the years to become completely different than it's original intent. I strongly believe that the shooting guard and the small forward spot have switched. In fact, every position has just become one based on size and not ability. As the position rises from the 1 spot to the [...]

Pickup of the Night: April 1

ANTHONY CARTER Do you pick up Carter in your league, or do you not? The Nuggets are a dynamic team, but Carter is behind AI, Melo, Camby, and Kenyon Martin in taking shots and getting stats. Well, Carter proved tonight he doesn't need the ball to produce and should be on your fantasy team. Sure Carter only had 8 points on 3-5 from the field and 2-3 from the line. But he not...

Day 87 of 170: DeeeeeAndreeeeeee!

Waiver Wire Line of the Night: DeAndre Jordan (1.11). If you had listened to Erik, you would have started Jordan yesterday and gotten 23, 12 and 4 blocks and honestly looked like a genius. Jordan, who is starting for the injured Marcus Camby, is a viable play until Camby et al returns, and possibly even after that.

Phil Jackson inspires a Semi-Comprehensive List of the Most Overrated Coaches

No matter how many times I see a Phil Jackson led team in the finals, I can't help but think that the word "genius," gets thrown around a little too much in reference to this guy. Is he a great coach? Of course he is. Is he a basketball genius? My probably biased mind tells me no. Now correct me if I am wrong, but I think Kobe and Phil would be making tee times at Riviera...

Worst of the Night: January 15, 2008

Denver Nuggets supporting cast: Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson (before he got ejected) played pretty well last night; both guys actually shot 50 percent or better for a change. But Anthony Carter (zero points, 0-for-5), Marcus Camby (4 points, 2-for-6), Eduardo Najera (zero points, 0-for-5), Linas...

Dirtlocker points for: Boris Diaw, Melvin Ely, Robert Horry, Kenyon Martin, Steve Nash, Amare Stoudemire, David Stern THE NBA's brand of jus tice continues to bewilder and disfigure.
