LAS VEGAS As Bryan Gates walked through Cox Pavilion, he was greeted with hugs from several friends who heard he would be joining the Kings' coaching staff.
Gates, the coach of the Idaho Stampede of the NBA Development League since 2006, was a two-time D-League Coach of the Year (2006-07, '07-08). He went 100-50 and led the Stampede to the 2007-08 D-League title.
"The hardest part of my wife, Robin, and I leaving home is the support the Idaho Stampede family has given us over the years," Gates said in a statement. "I am elated about the opportunity that Coach (Paul) Westphal and the Sacramento Kings have given me, and I can't wait to get to work."
Gates met with Westphal earlier this week and has been at the NBA Summer League working with the Denver Nuggets. The Stampede is Denver's D-League affiliate.
Gates joins Mario Elie, Jim Eyen, Truck Robinson, Pete Carril and Shareef Abdur-Rahim on the staff.
