According to two sources with knowledge of the situation, two-time NBA Development League Coach of the Year Bryan Gates will soon be added to the staff of Kings coach Paul Westphal. Gates is considered a rising star in the coaching ranks, having coached in the United States Basketball League, International Basketball Association and the Carolinas Basketball League before his successful run with the Idaho Stampede began in 2006. His teams were a combined 100-50 in three seasons, winning a 2008 D-League championship. Gates was Coach of the Year for the 2006-07 and '07-08 seasons. He is known as a top-notch developer of talent, most recently being credited with much of the progress made by Mike Taylor. Last season, the former Stampede point guard became the first player to be drafted out of the D-League when he was taken in the second round by Portland and soon thereafter traded to the Clippers.
