Andrew Wiggins is arguably the best NBA prospect to hit the scene since Kevin Durant in 2007, maybe even since LeBron James in 2003. Although many consider Wiggins to be the consensus number one overall pick when he declares for the draft, during Big 12 Media day Wiggins says that he doesn’t think he should be compared to James and Durant so soon:
“I’ve got a long way to go before I can be compared to LeBron and Durant,” Wiggins said. “Those are the best players in the world right now and I’m still in college. So I think it’s really unfair to compare me to someone of that caliber. Hopefully one day I can be compared to them, but I think I still have a long way to go before I can be.”
While Wiggins is correct in saying that he’s not on the same level as James and Durant right now, what most are comparing him to is James and Durant when they were at the same stages in their careers as Wiggins currently is. When judging by that standard, the comparisons are more than fair.
Based off of his abilities, Wiggins is indeed the best prospect to come along in some time. Wiggins has next level athleticism, ideal NBA size for a wing and the game seemed to come easy for him at the high school level. It remains to be seen if the same holds true in college, but if it does, by this time next year Wiggins will find himself playing against the likes of James and Durant on a nightly basis.
