The Cleveland Cavaliers shocked the world when they selected UNLV’s Anthony Bennett with the 1st overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. Bennett’s name had rarely come up as a possible candidate for the number one spot with guys like Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel, and Kansas’ Ben McLemore garnering most of the attention.
Take a look at this video below of Bennett and a reporter shooting a few hoops:

When the reporter asked Bennett to palm the basketball and he says “Oh, I can’t palm the basketball..” really quick, I couldn’t help but laugh. Bennett seemed clearly embarrassed and it got worse as he continued to miss every jumper he took. The only shot that actually went in the basket was a layup. The reporter eventually got a jumper to go, in a sport coat, while Bennett never made one. Remind me again why he was taken #1? I guess the 2013 Draft was weaker than I thought. In case you are scoring at home, it’s Reporter In A Sport Coat: 1, Anthony Bennett: 0.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to sit here and say the Cavaliers made a huge mistake by drafting Bennett because of his small hands. Shawn Kemp had famously small hands, and he could not palm a basketball either. Kemp was still able to soar through the air and throw down some awesome dunks. With his smaller hands, those dunks were spectacular. Kemp was also selected to six All-Star teams before having to call it quits.
Judging by the video, I can’t see Anthony Bennett doing a lot of soaring through the air like Shaun Kemp. I don’t see Anthony Bennett being selected to six All-Star teams, either. I’m not going to say the Cavaliers made a huge mistake because he can’t palm the basketball or make a jumper. I just wonder how much longer the camera needed to roll before we could see the #1 overall pick make more jumpers than a reporter in a sport coat?
