Andre Drummond, the Pistons’ rookie who has shown flashes of outright brilliance and dominance, is getting quite the unique treatment for his injured back. Drummond is expected to miss 4-6 weeks due to the injury, but he can still be seen at Pistons shootarounds . . . playing the bongos. That is not a typo. When asked why he was playing the bongos, Drummond replied, “This is my rehab.” Arnie Kander, the Pistons strength and conditioning coach, said the drum is a way for the team to keep the rookie center engaged and feel like he is part of the team. But this weird form or rehab does actually serve a physical purpose. Kander added that playing the bongos requires good posture, helping to strengthen Drummond’s core. Head coach Lawrence Frank is on board with the treatment. Sometimes, in all professional sports, when you’re injured, it’s like sometime you become invisible. It’s just the nature of it. I think it’s important that we integrate Andre in everything we do, and he integrates himself, too. Mentally, you have to prepare like you’re playing.
