Bill Russell had non-emergency open heart surgery about three weeks ago Russell told John Hareas of NBA Entertainment. Russell said he needed to have a valve replaced in his heart and went in for relatively routine surgery to correct it. As Russell said, open-heart surgery sounds pretty serious but this was a non-emergency procedure. The surgery has kept Russell from doing his normal summer activities. He missed his charity golf tournament in New York, the last time he says he will miss it, and has been generally incapacitated as he rehabs from the surgery. Russell, the NBA's most decorated champion, is really one of the last links to the NBA's early days. He won 12 championships and was the bedrock of the Boston Celtics championship run of the 1960s. His battles with Wilt Chamberlain are the stuff of NBA lore and Russell is often the standard by which all other centers are compared (even if history declares they are better than him). Russell is a treasure as ...

Boston Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss relayed a message to ESPNBoston.com from Russell's business manager, Stuart Layne, saying Russell is up and about and feeling better each day. On Monday, former...

Bill Russell Plans to Hit Golf Course Soon After Heart Surgery, Jokes He Will Be Grouchy In Meantime

Bill Russell seems to be in high spirits after an open-heart procedure three weeks ago that put a brief scare into Boston fans. Russell, 78, underwent a routine procedure to replace a valve in his heart. The procedure caused him to miss the Mentor's Golf Tournament he attends every year in New York, with the 11-time NBA champion sending his regrets. He vowed this will be the...

Your Morning Dump… Where Bill Russell is still bad ass

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Bill Russell: I mostly didn’t do anything but I did take care of a health question that needed to be addressed. It’s really funny, but what I did was almost routine. But when you describe it, it doesn’t sound...

Bill Russell Believes Debating About Olympic Teams From Different Eras is Useless, as Teams Cannot 'Play Against Ghosts'

The U.S. men's basketball team dominated the Olympics this summer, drawing comparisons between the 2012 version and the legendary 1992 "Dream Team." NBA legend -- and 1956 gold medalist -- Bill Russell is not interested in the comparison between Olympic teams -- or any comparison between teams from different eras, really. Russell was very impressed with the 2012 team...

Bill Russell – Is a Statue Enough?

In the wake of recent reports about Bill Russell’s health, I have been contemplating anew the city’s plan to erect a statue in his honor.  Notoriously unmoved by public accolades, and only recently submitting to the creation of a statue in his honor, Bill Russell remains a singularly worthy and complex subject of civic adulation. In May, Mayor Menino [...]

Bill Russell Unsure Whether Celtics' Offseason Additions Make Team Contender Until They Play Together

As individual players, Jason Terry and Courtney Lee are pretty good. On paper, each should be able to fill in somewhat for the loss of Ray Allen, and help keep the Celtics among the league's better teams. Whether their contributions help the Celtics remain a championship contender, however, is uncertain. Bill Russell knows a few things about building a winning formula, and for...

Bill Russell Correctly Resists Storyline that LeBron James Elevated Game in Heat's Run to Title

Ever since LeBron James led the Miami Heat to the NBA championship last spring, everyone insists that the much-maligned three-time league MVP stepped up in a way he never had before. James finally took charge and delivered in the clutch in a way that was supposedly different from how he performed in the first eight years of his career. Bill Russell does not think so, though. In Russell...

Bill Russell Admires Bill Belichick's Coaching Philosophy to 'Win With What You Have'

Bill Russell and Bill Belichick are two of the region's greatest winners, and at least one of those champions has great respect for the other. At the conclusion of an extended interview with NBA.com, Russell was asked which coaches he admires today. The question was posed in the context of asking about NBA coaches, with Russell's longtime coach Red Auerbach as an example...
