Players waived today: K. Joseph & J. Varnado (BOS), S. Samuels (CLE), C. Douglas-Roberts (DAL), S. Young (IND), L. Hayward (MIN) and ...39 minutes ago via UberSocial for BlackBerryReplyRetweetFavorite@ESPNSteinLineMarc SteinThe Celtics celebrated a rather macabre NBA holiday this afternoon, the annual exodus of players with non-guaranteed deals who haven’t been impressive to earn guaranteed deals, by cutting Jarvis Varnado and Kris Joseph. Per Marc Stein of ESPN, the deadline to cut non-guaranteed deals before they become guaranteed is tomorrow at 5 pm.This move is disappointing, although it shouldn’t be entirely surprising. Varnado, a hard-working shot-blocker and rebounder in the D-League, is the kind of player that sounded useful to the Celtics when he was signed two weeks ago, and Kris Joseph is a rookie. It’s always hard to see a rookie get waived. But although we’d love to see players develop within the Celtics’ system, both Varnado and Joseph are older rookies without a ton of room for improvement. More importantly, Varnado was competing for minutes with Jared Sullinger and Brandon Bass while Joseph went up against Pierce and Green. There really weren’t a lot of minutes available at either position.Interestingly, waiving Varnado and Joseph leaves the Celtics with more room for future deals. We are all very pleased with the last two games, and it certainly feels like the Celtics have turned a corner even if the sample size is much, much, much too small to make any kind of real judgment. But if Boston takes another turn for the worse (*knocking on all the wood*), this leaves some room for roster tinkering. Obviously, it would be ideal if no tinkering was necessary, but this gives the Celtics more wiggle room if it is.Follow Tom on Twitter: @Tom_NBA.
