Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol came out on the losing end by a nose at the racetrack. The gelding part-owned by the Los Angeles Lakers stars was beaten by that margin in the first race Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park. Siempre Mio took the lead under Joy Scott and maintained it into the stretch, then fought back when challenged by Valkyrie Missile only to lose a photo finish to the 3-5 favorite in the $12,500 claiming race at six furlongs. Siempre Mio was racing for the first and last time in bright gold silks that featured a Lakers emblem and purple cap for Scott. The gelding, which has two wins in six career starts, was claimed after the race by Donkey Island Racing, a partnership that includes New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees. There were five other claims put in for the horse, too. Bryant and Gasol had purchased an interest in the horse at a Lakers charity auction in April. Siempre Mio is trained by Doug O'Neill, who oversaw I'll Have Another to recent victories ...

Lakers reportedly ‘committed’ to trading Pau Gasol

Possibly more bad news for Pau Gasol‘s future with the Lakers. With the incessant trade chatter surrounding L.A.’s favorite scapegoat far from relenting, Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News drops this interesting little tidbit about Gasol’s potentially impending departure: The Lakers are committed to moving Pau Gasol — the fall guy for their second-round ouster against...

Pau Gasol Not Root of Lakers' Problems, But That Hardly Matters Amid Trade Rumors

A very good player could be available at a very bad price. Pau Gasol is back on the market, according to reports, not that he ever left. The Los Angeles Lakers apparently are willing to take back less talent in the quest to move the 31-year-old forward and his $19 million salary. If they succeed, it is difficult to see any such deal improving the Lakers' title hopes. Gasol is...

Phil Jackson says he tried to get Kobe Bryant to pass more like LeBron James

Before we go blowing these quotes out of proportion, it’s important to remember that Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant won a lot of championships together. Without Kobe, Phil wouldn’t have more championship rings than he has fingers. Just as he wouldn’t trade Michael Jordan for any player in NBA history, I’m sure Jackson feels the same way about Kobe. All disclaimers aside, it...

Pau Gasol will watch your spinal cord surgery while you sleep (Video)

Last week, Lakers forward Pau Gasol was at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles to witness a spinal cord surgery done on 15-year old Joshua Sandoval. If you remember a previous post we did, we noted that Gasol had already been to one of these surgeries back in 2010 and that he was an medical student at the University of Barcelona before turning to a life of basketball:(Note: Some...

Kobe, Gasol lose horse to QB Brees

A horse named Siempre Mio has gone from one MVP owner to another. The 4-year-old gelding raced Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park with 2008 NBA MVP Kobe Bryant and Los Angeles Lakers teammate Pau Gasol among his owners. Upon crossing the finish line in second place, he belonged to 2009 NFL MVP Drew Brees and his partners. Yes, Brees claimed a racehorse away from Bryant and Gasol...
